Coffee Table

This archetypal Deco table was inspired by shagreen, made popular by Jean-Claude Galluchat, a master of the material who enjoyed the patronage of Madame de Pompadour who in turn introduced his work to the court of Louis XV. Usually made from the skin of sharks or rays, it is surprisingly resilient, typically used in the eighteenth century for luggage and book-bindings. Adopted by Art Deco for its ornamental effect, it has been combined here with handsome macassar ebony veneer inlaid with silver.
